What is the difference between looking into a microscope and looking into a telescope? In one case something minimal becomes intelligible, in the other, something immense. But in both cases you end up with a whole new dimension being captured into a small circular surface and if you approach your eye to that circle, it becomes your own field of experience for that moment.
Now think of everyday life and of those moments where it feels like something immense meets something tiny and where this instant seems to last forever. This happens to me when I suddenly get caught by a random stain on the pathway as if it were a painting revealing a thousand stories. When I was taught about the roots of jazz in an anthropology lecture and I discovered this old recording of slaves’ chants in the cotton fields that started resonating with my own heartbeat. When, meeting a new person, an intimate link is created, as if I was recognizing someone I don’t actually know. Then time and space seem to expand and I find myself completely immersed in the experience of the moment, feeling grateful, feeling alive.
